For many years, John Bryans painted portraits of paper bags almost exclusively. The brown bag shown here is a relatively tiny piece, but has exquisite movement and even sensuality.
Bryans branched out to paint wonderful victorian houses usually set on the beach and frequently with a small nude figure running into the water. Each house is a real house, but moved to a different locale.
"Viburnum Country House" is also a real house. Here Bryans uses a pastoral setting to captures Bryans' love for the beauty and simplicity of nature, a fine contrast to the huge estate house.
